CEP Ottawa Presents:

Behavioural Change and the Environment

CEP’s Engage Series

Tuesday, January 24, 2017   6:00-9:00 pm

Join us at Mantovani 1946 for refreshments, delicious Italian treats, and jedi mind tricks.

How do we promote recycling in a community that is in the process of starting a recycling program? Do we:

  • send each household a flyer explaining how to recycle?
  • encourage the community by telling them how much better their neighbour (rival) town is recycling their waste?
  • train the kids in school?

What works more effectively if we want to make energy efficiency a habit among employees in a company?

  • monetary rewards to those employees that practice energy efficiency the best,
  • shaming employees that leave the lights/computers on over night by sending out an email to the whole company the following day.

How would you advise a utility company that is looking to encourage you (the consumer) to use less electricity?

  • raise the price of electricity!
  • tell me how my neighbours are doing in comparison,
  • tell me why it's good to save electricity.

Which one of these approaches will most likely lead to fundamental behavioural change in a society?

In this round-table discussion, we will be leveraging findings from the behavioural sciences to answer these questions! We are joined by guest speaker Laura Scrimgeour-Carter, behaviour facilitation specialist at Bioregional North America, and principle at Soar Behaviour Consulting. Laura will start the discussion by presenting an overview of the fundamentals of behavioural science, positive psychology and behavioural economics that are used to study behaviour change, and how they can be applied towards achieving a successful implementation of environmental behavioural change.

Our audience is then invited to participate in the discussion, and we will brainstorm together on ways we can address positive behavioural change. This is not your typical Q&A  - the audience engages in the discussion!

While the focus is on environmental behavioural change, the same fundamentals can be applied in our daily lives -in personal and professional relationships, personal goals and initiatives, and so much more.

Hopefully you haven't fully given up on your New Year's Resolutions by the time you register for our event!
